There has always been a need in society to access information in order to stay informed, to make informed decisions and to improve educational and career prospects.

Information has always been readily available through traditional sources such as newspapers, books, libraries, archives, business/personal directories, educational establishments and scholarly texts. To access information in the traditional way meant a journey to a place such as a library, a bookshop or a newspaper shop to view the physical information source. It also meant that the content within those sources was static and could not be easily updated .
